There are many reasons you may want to search the master food database.
You might want to get a list of items that have similar names but are in
different categories, such as peanut butter cookies and peanut butter ice cream.
You may be interested in finding some high-protein low-fat foods to add to
your diet.
When you click the Search Master Foods button on the
Master Food List Dialog, this dialog, called Search Master Food
Criteria appears. You tell Eatometer what to search for here.
Entering Search Criteria
Composition Percentages
Click By Caloric Percent or By Weight Percent to select
the calculation you want to use.
Searching Using Multiple Criteria
The controls at the bottom of the dialog will be grayed out or lit up
depending on the type of search you are doing. If you want to search
for text, you just enter the search text and click Search.
If you are searching by composition, you will need to fill in the following
information.
The percentages of the 3 main nutritional elements of foods,
protein, carbs, and fat can be calculated two ways. The most
obvious is by weight, but perhaps a more useful way is by caloric
value. Since fats contain nine calories per gram, while carbs and
proteins only contain four, the percentages will differ depending on
the method used.
You might want to find a food that is low in fat but high in protein.
You can do this by using the Search Where? - Search Current Results
option.
First, search for foods that are low in fat, looking in the entire database
or the selected category. Then, perform a search on the Current Results
for foods high in protein. You can search the current results again
and again until you click the Exit Search Results Mode button
on the Master List dialog, which resets your list to the items in the
selected category.
