Maintenance Calories Calculator

The Maintenance Calories Calculator is used to calculate, based on certain physical and activity criteria, the number of calories needed to maintain your current weight.

Before entering any values here, note that by default entries are in English units. Click Metric if you want to use metric units.

Select Calculation Mode - select the calculation method here.

  • If you know your current percentage of body fat within 2%, use the first I know my body fat percentage mode. This mode uses the Katch-McArdle method for calculating BMR (basal metabolic rate) and then factors in activity level to arrive at a maintenance calories value.

Just enter your weight (in pounds or kilograms if in Metric mode) and your body fat percentage.

  • If you don't know your body fat percentage, use the I don't know my bodyfat percentage mode. This mode uses the Harris-Benedict formula for BMR.

Enter your weight (pounds or kilograms), height (inches or centimeters) age and gender.

  • Once you have calculated your BMR using one of the modes above, select the appropriate Activity Level from the drop down list at the bottom. Your maintenance calories value will display.

You can calculate a desired daily caloric intake for weight gain or loss using the caloric goal calculator included here. For weight loss, click the minus button and enter caloric reduction percentage, usually between 10 and 20 percent. For weight gain, click plus.

Click the Set Goal button to invoke the The Goal Calculator with your calculated caloric value.
